ANTT online training

Aseptic technique is the most commonly performed critical infection prevention competency in healthcare. However, poor standards of aseptic technique have been widely recognised as a significant factor in health care associated infection (HAI). Helping reduce this risk, ANTT has become the most widely used standard for aseptic technique in healthcare internationally and is being established as a universal practice language for aseptic technique. It is used in nearly 20 countries, is the de facto standard for aseptic technique across the English National Health Service (NHS) and is being adopted rapidly across Australia.

ANTT has been referenced as a best practice example in many publications including:

  • National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) (2010) as part of the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare (2010)
  • Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare (2010) as part of the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare.
  • NICE (2012) Infection prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections in primary and community care
  • Health Protection Surveillance Centre Ireland (2011) Guidelines for the Prevention of Catheter, associated Urinary Tract Infection
  • Australian Commission for Health and Quality (2010) Australian Guidelines for the prevention and control of infection in healthcare
  • Royal College of Nursing Infusion Standards (2010), and
  • Epic2 (2007) National evidence-based guidelines for preventing healthcare associated infections in NHS hospitals in England.

Working with e3Learning, a global provider of online learning, the Association for Safe Aseptic Technique (ASAP) are developing a range of online ANTT training courses to assist organizations to introduce and maintain this critical healthcare competency.

These courses will be the only officially accredited ANTT eLearning modules worldwide. The courses are designed to be completed by healthcare clinicians who are required to carry out invasive clinical procedures and tasks as part of their scope of practice.

ANTT - Foundation

The introductory course is ANTT Foundation. This is the cornerstone to this methodology and is essential for all healthcare professionals to understand and apply to clinical practice settings.

ANTT Foundation explains to the participant the following:

  • Principles and safeguards of ANTT Aseptic technique as a critical clinical competency
  • How patients get infected during clinical procedures
  • How we can protect patients becoming infected ANTT framework: Surgical ANTT and Standard ANTT
  • ANTT framework: key sites; key parts; critical aseptic field, general aseptic field, micro critical aseptic fields.
  • ANTT principle's and safeguards to practice.

Additional modules are being created and will cover procedures including cannulation and blood culture collection.

The online modules enable learners to complete training in their own time and includes professional voice over narration and online assessment.

Courses will be available using the LearnForce, Learning Management System (LMS) to track and report on training in real time or can be delivered on any SCORM compliant LMS. The ability for healthcare organisations to track and report on staff training in aseptic technique is a fast developing requirement of effective Clinical Governance.

ANTT Practice and development is overseen and regulated by the Association for Safe Aseptic Practice (ASAP), a non-profit international organization, whose mission is to help support a reduction in healthcare associated infection.
